Some Doctors have asked about how to adjust the arms of the Herbst, or how long to leave them. I usually, leave the rod at least 5mm long, or longer if the patient can tolerate it. I mark the rod length intra orally with a 330 bur, and cut it outside of the mouth with the highspeed and water. Here is a pic from a Herbst lab manual. Clinicians must always be aware of the hazards of using limited knowledge in integrating new techniques or procedures into their practice. Only comprehensive knowledge with sound evidence-based dentistry should be used in patient therapy.
