The article presents the findings of a national survey in South Korea that aimed to investigate the relationship between orthodontic treatment and periodontal disease. The study involved 1,129 participants who had received orthodontic treatment and 3,144 who had not. The results showed that those who had undergone orthodontic treatment had a lower prevalence of periodontal disease than those who had not. However, among those who had received orthodontic treatment, there was a higher prevalence of periodontal disease in those who had not received regular dental check-ups or had poor oral hygiene. The authors concluded that orthodontic treatment may have a protective effect against periodontal disease, but good oral hygiene practices and regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining periodontal health.
